Behind the Camera

I'm Nick Johnson, a fashion, beauty, and portrait photographer based in Eugene, Oregon.

For more than two decades, I've photographed people in all kinds of settings, from fashion editorials and beauty campaigns to intimate, personal portrait sessions. And while my work has taken me into studios, backstage at fashion shows, and onto commercial productions, some of my favorite photographs have come from working one-on-one with someone who simply wanted to see themselves in a different light.

My approach to photography is rooted in fashion and editorial imagery, but you don't have to be a model to be photographed like one.

I believe a great portrait is about more than looking good in front of a camera. It's about personality, confidence, expression, and creating something that feels like you, even when we're exploring a side of you that doesn't often get the spotlight.

Some people come to me with a very specific vision. Others just know they want something different from the usual portraits. Both are great places to start.

I enjoy the collaborative process of figuring out what makes a photograph interesting, from wardrobe and lighting to the little moments of expression and movement that make an image feel alive. I'll offer direction when you need it, leave room for spontaneity, and help create an environment where you can relax, experiment, and enjoy the experience.

My background in fashion and beauty has shaped the way I see light, composition, and style. Over the years, I've worked with models, artists, hairstylists, designers, and brands throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and served as co-director of Seattle Fashion Week. Those experiences inform everything I photograph, whether it's a commercial campaign or a personal session created just for you.

Today, my work spans fashion, beauty, glamour, and editorial portraiture. Sometimes the goal is to build a portfolio or promote a business. Sometimes it's to celebrate a milestone, explore a new side of yourself, or simply have photographs you've always wanted but never quite made the time for.

You don't need modeling experience, a special occasion, or even a fully formed idea. Just a willingness to create something together.
